What a day for Guernsey Rugby, It started with the Guernsey Vets winning the Nash Trophy for only the second time in 21 years with a convincing 42-3 victory.

Then not to be out done the 1st XV put in their best performance of the season to beat a Jersey side full of semi professionals and win the Siam Cup for the second time in three years. It really does not get better than this.

Jersey put us under tremendous pressure in the first half hour but the defence was magnificent and all they had to show for their efforts was a forty-yard penalty. This really was not going the way the script had been written and the Jersey team seemed to lose heart as Guernsey slowly turned the screw. At the end of the first half it was Guernsey who went in ahead after sneaking a late try. After the break it was Guernsey all the way with the back row outstanding in defence and attack, Guernsey just believed they were going to win and who could blame them when they were dominating the game in every area. Guernsey looked the side in the league above and for all the hype about Jersey’s semi pro’s it was the Guernsey players who understood the passion of this fixture.

With about 10 mins remaining Guernsey were however only one score up and the game was still in the balance at 14-8. Then up stepped Nick Barton to put over a penalty that meant Jersey would have to score twice and the travelling support in the 4000+ crowd seemed to sense this was going to be Guernsey’s day. When the final whistle blew the Guernsey players and crowd were ecstatic

Wow what a day and what a night if my pounding head is anything to go by.
